Behind the journey

The old medical saying goes, "if you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras", that is, think of the commonplace, not the unusual. As we prepare for another trip to Africa, we know that zebras are much more common than horses there. We think about the experiences that we will have, those that will quietly change us and our way of understanding the world, and those that will strengthen our faith in humanity.

We leave on Wednesday - first for Nairobi and then on to Eldoret, Kenya. Seven years ago, we were there as a family of five. This year, Josh is in DC and Charlie is in Aspen. So, this time, it's Alan, Ada and Maya (who will turn 17 in Africa). Seven years ago, none of us ever heard of blogs. We thought we'd give this a try.
