Hello, Carnivore Restaurant? Do you have vegetarian meals available?

Yes, our plan for tonight is to go to the storied Carnivore Restaurant - Maya's request. And yes, that phone conversation did take place.

But, back to our new found host - Charles. We had an international dinner at Charles' home - Kenya, Australia, Israel and us - a memorable feast of homemade gefilte fish, challah and coffee ice cream (move over Ice Cream Smith) along with duck, numerous veggies and more. We learned about Jewish families that escaped Europe to Africa and built homes and then lived through the "emergency" or the Mao Mao revolution that eventually brought Kenya to independence from Britain. Many of those Jews kept on moving along to other parts of the world. Charles' family stayed and has been running the Fairview Hotel - the longest running family owned hotel in Kenya - for 60 years.

This morning's Shabbat services were lovely. Alan had an Aliyah and got scolded for kibitzing too much. Talk about feeling right at home! A brief stop at the Kenya National Museum (one thumb up, two thumbs down from us) and on to the Giraffe Centre to feed and even kiss giraffes. Maya is sooo brave!
